Project of completion of the Baltic Rim Bike Path. Bicycle tourism has been gaining popularity as a kind of active rest-time during last decades. Bicycle tourism is ecologically friendly one and meets requirements of sustainable development. In many European countries bike roads and related infrastructure are actively expanding. Some of the bike lanes go to the border of Kaliningrad Oblast: in Poland there are bike lanes in Krynitsy Morska, Fromborg, Braniewo; in Lithuania – in Nida.
Regional Development Agency (Kaliningrad) was asked by EastWest Institute to look at various opportunities to complete a bike road that would connect Polish and Lithuanian routes along the Baltic Sea Coast. However, the current situation with bike tourism in Kaliningrad requires a more general approach. Construction of the bike lane without bolstering the popularity of the bicycle tourism and increasing attractiveness of Kaliningrad as a general tourist destination would be a waste of money. At the same time bike lanes are only one part of the infrastructure required for bicycle tourism development, and renovation and construction of tourist objects will, without doubt, increase a number bike tourist in the region.
Thus the current document looks at international experience in development of bicycle tourism, problems and barriers in its developments in Kaliningrad Oblast, describes existing infrastructure for bicycle tourism in Kaliningrad and suggests ways to promote it in the region. The document also discusses possible bike routes in Kaliningrad Oblast, provides estimates of necessary costs to construct it and describes some problems that have to be resolved.
