Sovetsk (former Tilsit) was founded in 1552. The city assumed its name in 1946.

Sovetsk, a city of regional subordination, is the second largest city of the Kaliningrad region in terms of territory. It is located at the border with Lithuania on the left side of Neman river, 59 km off its influx, 123 km to the northeast of Kaliningrad.

Sovietsk borders Lithuania in the north, Neman area of the Kaliningrad region in the south and the east, Slavsk area in the north. Administrative centers of these two areas are 7 km away from Sovetsk.

The distance to Khrabrovo airport (the Kaliningrad region) is 150 km, to Vilnius (Republic of Lithuania) – 260 km, to Moscow – 1100 km.

Sovestk territory makes up 44.4 sq. km.

As of 2004, the city population made up 43481 people.

Sovetsk is an industrial city. Analysis of economic situation of its industrial complex testifies of positive development trend set in the five preceding years. The industrial sector accounts for up to 40% of the Gross City Product.
