Gurievsk area was established in 1946 with Gurievsk as its centre (Gurievsk, former Noihausen – founded in 1262).

Population of the area is 48. thousand people, including 37.6 thousand people of rural population.

Territorially Gurievsk area surrounds Kaliningrad (the regional centre is surrounded from free sides, distance between Kaliningrad and Gurievsk is 7 km) and has a very favourable geographic location. It has outlets to Curonian and Kaliningrad bays (non-freezing access to the Baltic Sea is possible through these bays). The largest river of the region, Pregolya, running through the area and flowing into Kaliningrad bay, is navigable throughout its length.

The area includes 9 rural areas.

The total area of this municipality is 136.3 thousand hectares.
