"Zelenogradsky area" municipality is located in the north-western part of the Kaliningrad region. The area is washed by waters of the Baltic Sea and Curonian bay, separated from the sea by Curonian spit.
State nature national park "The Curonian spit" lies within administrative border of the municipality.
Zelenogradsk (former Kranz) - the administrative centre of "Zelenogradsky area" municipality – has a federal resort status and is located on the Baltic Sea shore 32 km off the regional centre, Kaliningrad, connected with it by a motorway and a railroad branch. "Khrabrovo" airport is 17 km off Zelenogradsk. A transit motor road to Lithuania ( Klaipeda) runs through Zelenogradsk.
Total population of the municipality is 32.3 thousand people, including 14.5 thousand people living in the administrative centre, Zelenogradsk.
The total area of the municipality is 201649 hectares, including: agricultural land – 51182 hectares, forestry – 18224 hectares, available land - 120324 hectares.
The municipality has unique natural resources for development of recreation, tousim and water sports: the sea, mild sea climate, beaches, forests, picturesque landscape, mineral waters and therapeutic muds.
