Yantarny urban area» municipality was registered (obtained status of a area) on June 7, 2004.
Administrative centre of the municipality is Yantarny
urban settlement (former Palmniken). The official year of foundation of the settlement is 1654.
Apart from Yantarny the area includes Sinyavinovo (former
Gross Hubniken) and Pokrovskoye (former Zorengau).
The area population makes up 6.1 thousand people.
Yantrany assumed its present name thanks to the largest in the world amber deposit of estimated 350
thousand tons (about 90% of the world stock).
The area occupies a strategically favourable geographic location. It is 50 km to the north-west of the
regional centre, Kaliningrad, located in a resort area at the Baltic Sea shore.
Total area - 1550 hectares, including: forestry - 202 hectares, agricultural
land – 128 hectares, water areas – 90 hectares.
