"Chernyakhovsky area" municipality is located in the very centre of the
Kaliningard region. The distance to Kaliningrad is 86 km.
Total area of the
municipality is 129 thousand hectares, including: agricultural land – 79.4
thousand hectares, forestry – 30.7 thousand hectares, water areas
– 780 hectares.
The municipality includes Cherniahovsk and 7 rural areas of
108 settlements: Berezhkovsky, Zagorsky, Kaluzhsky, Kamensky, Krasnopolyansky,
Svobodnensky
and Kalinpvsky rural areas.
Cherniahovsk area enjoys favourable geographic
location, being at the crossing of two important transport-planning axes:
"West-East" (Kaliningrad-Cherniakhovsk-Vilnius)
and "North-South" (Poland-Krylovo-Cherniakhovsk-Bolshakovo-Sovietsk-Riga).
Cherniakhovsk
(former Insterburg) is the largest railway junction in the region. Motor
roads from west to east, connecting Kaliningrad with
Russia,
and from
north to south, connecting Lithuania and Poland, run through the city.
Cherniakhovsk is 260 km away from Vilnius, 480 km – from Warsaw, 1200
km – from Moscow.
Apart from railway and motor road communication, Cherniakhovsk has
access to the Baltic Sea through Pregolya river, which runs from east
to west.

including: Cherniakhovsk population – 43200 people, population of
rural areas – 14400
people.
Cherniakhovsk is included in the number of historic cities of Russia.
The municipality has a reach historic and cultural heritage – medieval
castles,
historic and
architectural monuments. For example, "Insterburg" castle in Cherniakhovsk
is a historic monument of the 14th century – the only place in
the Kaliningrad region where one can witness fights of medieval knights,
show of a theatre
of shadows, visit dungeon of the castle.
